Chris HarrisSenior Director, Industry Relations
Chris is Head of School, Diploma Studies and Senior Director, Industry Relations at Kaplan Higher Education Singapore. The former role is in academic leadership of a School with 26 diverse courses and over 100 faculty, while the latter will see Chris coordinate 6 mega-discipline Industry Advisory Boards as of June, 2016. Trained in the fields of Literature, Journalism, Media Studies, Communication and Education at the University of Queensland, Macquarie University and the University of Sydney, Chris worked as Head of School (Hospitality Management) at the International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) and Berjaya University College of Hospitality, Malaysia before taking up the role at Kaplan in 2012. Prior to this Chris had an 11 year career in Hotel Management, the latter part of which was shared with adjunct lecturing roles at Kenvale College, ICMS and Macquarie University.
A passionate teacher of communications, hospitality and management and an enthusiastic seeker of new ways of knowing and teaching, Chris has led 3 major Blended Learning Projects in 3 countries, over 8 years and thousands of students, and has learned as much about change management as learning and teaching in the process. Most importantly, working on changing faculty perceptions has demonstrated the need for appropriate learning spaces within which to showcase online materials so that lecturers buy in to the whole Blended Learning cycle and don’t abandon the online to the wastelands of the worldwide web. To this end, Kaplan appointed Chris and a diverse team of academics, elearn designers, Moodlers, Engineers and IT professionals as well as partners Samsung and Furnware to work on the creation of “The Synergy Pod” classroom, an enabler of Blended and Collaborative Learning. The Synergy Pod launched on May 9, 2016 and has been experienced by O-Level, English Language and Undergraduate student cohorts. Chris will share some of the early data on the Pod during the panel.
In 2015 this work on Blended Curriculum and learning space design resulted in Christopher achieving the Kaplan Way Worldwide Individual Award for Enabling Student Success. The awards received 900 nominations from over 20 countries.
